When discussing branding, none of you could come up with one. You kept sidestepping it. The closest you got was for Luke to use his infamous phrase “get fucked!” This is a problem! No one can ever get to a point where they can decipher what our brand should be. I encourage you to try this exercise again and use comments from your listeners to see if you can actually develop a brand. I do wonder if, based on your conversation, we start with a “human first” approach which recognizes dignity before identity. This does not mean that we do not recognize identity, but as you all said, it’s up to the individual, recognizing that our identities intersect. First, let’s just start with honoring and respecting all individuals.
I’m a huge fan of this podcast and appreciate each of you, but as a listener based in Texas, it was hard to listen to the commentary around the floods. This comment was the hardest: “They have no warning systems because..Kerr County was 75% MAGA in the last election..and let’s just say it they didn’t want to pay for the infrastructure..” Even as a Democrat who is consistently disappointed and outraged with leadership, the coverage felt like it really missed the mark. If you’re going to make that statement, dig into it and get very clear on the “they” you’re referring to. There have been applications for funding for a system that were denied. There have been local leaders who have advocated for upgrades for years. And while we need to hold officials accountable, many rural areas in red and blue states have the same battle around funding for these same issues.
In the future, I think if you’re going to cover ongoing tragedies and bring in politics, remember this is deeply raw for the communities and some of your listeners. We’re rocked and heartbroken here, Democrats and Republicans alike. To get to the heart of what happened, you needed more time, more research, and more space for nuance.
Someone was talking about your governor skipping town sometimes, and not doing much for the residents of Texas. I remember when he went on vacation after a hurricane hit Houston. Reading between the lines is necessary. Republicans don't care and it's showing up all over the country.
You’re talking about politics. I’m talking about honoring pain with nuance and care.
I walk out my door in the morning and see the blue ribbon on my tree and the trees of my neighbors, Republican and Democrat. I drive by the school around the corner and see the fence covered in blue ribbons and bouquets of flowers. Because there’s a little girl who is never coming home, and blue is her favorite color.
There is absolutely a political element to this, but there’s also a human element. We cannot lose sight of the humanity in ourselves and each other, and I don’t care who started it. I care about each of us holding ourselves accountable to behave differently, right now. It is the easiest thing to politicize this and tap into outrage; I want us to do the hard thing and express grief for their deaths, extend condolences to their families, talk about the bipartisan, nationwide struggle of finding money for rural infrastructure projects, and maybe suggest solutions and galvanize people around it. I’m asking that we all dig a little deeper, because this is a sound bite for some and a life-altering, destructive experience for others.
Who is there to listen to you, huh? Who???? Those gentlemen aren't trying to break things down to your individual level of hurting about what happened in TX. It's not up to them at all.
Not those panel members. There's only 5 of them and they're not speaking to commenters in that Live. I'm still listening to it now and am 3/4 done. I'm an hour into it.
Again, I’m not talking about elected officials. I’m talking about every day citizens like you, me, and in this case, the Find Out team. My understanding is that they hold themselves to high standards, and we can disagree, but I don’t believe they met them in this coverage.
Well, yeah, but it starts with the compassion showed by the leaders of your state. It's obvious that it won't happen at the federal level, so it has to happen at the local level. Without them, nothing happens FOR everyone living there. It's on individuals like that, because nobody is coming to save us. Your governor needs to inject that into the conversation. Who else will? Dems don't own the media anymore, so who will do it, Caitlin? That's the point I'm making. To me, Dems are just as spineless as the GOP. My frustration with them is palpable.
I’m in agreement with the majority of what you’re saying. The ways Republican leadership has failed us is a mile long, and my god would I love to see our leadership replaced with people who have a soul. My addition is that we cannot ignore the individual responsibility of us as citizens for what we say. Our words contribute and impact the political climate. Especially when we have a platform. For me, to deny that is to shirk our duty and shift our individual responsibility to someone else. We will lose our humanity in the process.
Those guys are trying to define what non-fascists are about. That's all they're talking about. What happened in TX was a freaky thing and tons of folks around the nation are heart-broken for you. I saw many myself as I jumped from podcast to podcast about it. But those men on that panel are not there to take care of you personally. They touched on the humanity part, and that could be good enough unless you're wanting individual attention. Ya know? Everybody who lives in catastrophic areas are getting left in the dark, but look around and you'll see how upset lots of people are about this fact. You didn't see it? Please look around. RMU had a video about that flash flood.
Love the idea for this episode! Democrats need this solved by the end of 2025 to be prepped for 2026 and time is slipping away. Personally, I want Dems to go on the offensive: I want them to promise and deliver investigations into insider trading, unlawful treatment of deportees, and use of military on US citizens. I want them also to seriously start talking about imposing term limits on themselves. And we won't be able to reverse Citizens United right away, but I want a long term promise that is a goal. Tie that to Bernie's resonating message about the oligarchy. That message has power - just look at the energy that an 80 year old man can produce. I'm sure I could go on - what do others think?!
I wouldn’t buy a shirt, because I wouldn't wear it out of the house. However, I would absolutely buy a sticker and put it on my water bottle. Stickers are where it's at! #GetFucked
I’ve been paying attention to politics for many, many, many years. As an indigenous Native American my perspective is obviously different from yours because of the history that remains silent. I had become disgusted by the spineless of democrats decades ago, only to become unidentifiable with the political establishment.
Here is my take on a problem that has been used every election as one of the most racist agenda by the gop and Dems: the border, or should I say southern border? Never discussion about the number of illegal immigration from our northern border. Why? Because it’s ok to use those brown people as the problem from whatever economic issues America or Americans are experiencing. The blatant racist clamor by the gop and the cowardly dem response because in order not to eliminate white and other voters about the issue. And it continues today by trump current efforts to rid America anyone brown.
While all this happens, the black caucus now runs the Democratic Party. Their own efforts to empower themselves using catch words; diversity, minorities, equal opportunities, etc… are not all inclusive. It’s only meant to empower black America.
this past election , the leadership direction of the Dems were the most unqualified members to lead the party. Having their own agenda.
Look at what happen to Hispanic / Latino voters. Completely ignored. It was a mistake not to focus on their voting power but their vote is still considered less than desirable for the black caucus who isn’t interested in empowering the Hispanic/Latino populace because it some how diminishes the black power infrastructure within the Democratic Party and overall economics.
Diversity, to me, means all inclusive of every non-white culture in America. That’s not the definition by black leaders.
White America only look at the racial struggle between blacks and whites. Never considering the relations between all the other minorities. What you’ll find, their is as much prejudice against each other, only to find Latinos are on the bottom of the totem pole with us, indigenous peoples.
Don’t even get me started about the total lack of interest of my indigenous culture and our history in America. The way Obama handled “standing rock” was a clear indication of how indigenous Americans were being ignored. Thank you veterans for stepping in.
As old as Bernie message rings true for many, he and AOC are the only ones I see fighting for the middle class and the rest of the minority communities. But the ol’ Democratic establishment will again fall prey to their own ignorant leadership because of their own agenda . If any of you have a chance to see the documentary: Vice Versa, season 1 episode 2, “Bernie Blackout,” it’s happening all over again when we need leadership, direction and some spine.
Well, that’s my take on a part of the problem with the Dems.
Just think if the Republicans had honored their oath to protect our constitution and democracy, during trumps first and second impeachment. Holding him responsible for January 6 and DOJ Garland had done his job immediately after being appointed to head the DOJ.
Oh that’s right we didn’t want to make it appear political. Such BS!
The rest is history.
Goodbye everyone and good luck to us all if we survive this attack on our democracy, Constitution and our lives.
Sorry, but you on to something…democrats also need to capture the wealth tax bracket too. If you talk about tax incentives that go directly into the “vulnerable “!
I reject the narrative that we have a message or brand problem. We self-sabotage by continuously questioning ourselves. Everyone could probably come up with at least 6 people who are doing great at reaching people. Those who don't care what they are labeled and just go out an speak their minds. We are the party that believes government should make everyone's life better. We believe that our taxes should go towards supporting those that need it.
In polls, all the things democrats run on are desired by a majority. Universal Healthcare, Universal background checks, safe and legal abortion, paths to citizenship, among others. If the message needs to be economical then it can be. When we say Universal healthcare or any other thing then the question asked is "how are you going to pay for it?" But saying "it pays for itself" doesn't get through to people. How about "cut the deficit" or something about the debt? Then just have the numbers. What we currently pay and what it would cost after implementing.
The democratic party needs to be like a woman. It needs to be progressive but not too progressive. It needs to be specific about its policies but not too specific about it's policies. It needs to be vague in messaging but also have a comprehensive plan. It needs to have all the right words at precisely the right time or be tossed out onto the curb. It needs to be loud and in your face but in a humble way, because we mustn't be egotistical.
To take the building a house perspective. We have to say both things, we have to say we need lumber, nails, and the list of all the things then be able to answer all the nitpicking questions about where, how, and why.
The narrative that Democrats have a messaging problem rings false to me, and is probably doing the most damage in the big picture.
The swing voters are voting based on political discourse background noise. They are not truly engaged, nor do they appear to have any serious grievance (if they did they’d pay attention and know who they align with). They hear from the Republican side that Democrats want to destroy America. They hear from the Democratic side that Democrats suck. So what does an ignorant swing voter do? They vote on emotions evoked by superficial political slogans and mainstream media horserace narratives.
I believe this, rather than an objective and rational analysis of where the party actually stands, is the major contributor to the current low approval polls of Democrats.
There is no single message that will resonate with everyone. We mustn’t lose sight of the fact the representatives are elected locally, and we are at the mercy of the biases of the local voters and the resultant “big tent” coalition. Democrats are still getting elected, so clearly their messages worked in their respective districts and the party is not in disarray. Democrats did not lose in 2024 by a landslide.
We have primaries to move the Democratic party to the progressive left. Just like the Republicans shifted further right to the Tea Party and then MAGA via primaries. If that shift doesn’t happen, it’s because of the local voters, not the party writ large. Keep in mind, the Biden years would have been much more progressive if not for those two f’n DINOs in the senate (from AZ, WV). The Democratic party’s core values are there, as they always have (in the modern era), and are evolving at the slow (unfortunately) pace of the local voters. Let’s keep trying to make this evolution faster, but while it is being slow and messy we need to keep our stuff together and not fall into frustration and circular firing squads.
I don’t have an answer as to what the resonant messages will be in every districts/state… My general recommendation is that we do not deride the Democratic party and instead boost it by “championing the cause” on any given topic. We have every reason to boost it: the core values are there, and the record is there (when the Ds get trifectas). Focus on specific elected officials that you deep inadequate, but not the party as a whole (which includes all of the progressives).
Here are some general things I wish would be said and elaborated on in political discourse (by candidates and commentators):
• The majority of the voting public agrees with the Democratic platform, whether they know it or not. (as MJRafanello mentioned above)
• The Republican party has a record of making things great for robber barons and bad for everyone else when they are in power.
• The Democratic party has a record of making (or trying to make) things better for everyone when they are in power.
• The zeroth law in American democracy is that in order to deliver on campaign promises, a party needs to have the trifecta of the Presidency, House majority, and Senate majority. Without this we get nothing! Don’t blame a party for not delivering when they can’t. (You can blame specific representatives, e.g. Blue dogs during ACA/Public Option debate, two senate DINO’s blocking voting rights bills).
• Not all politicians are the same. There is no equivalence between Democrats and Republicans. See party track records.
• Politics, in principle, owes no apologies and deserves no cynicism. This is how we hash out the social contract; this is what democracy looks like. Voters must pay attention and vote, or STFU.
• If progress isn't achieved because some in the "big tent" coalition were not sufficiently progressive, try again in the next primaries, don't blame the whole party.
Reading through you reply made me think a bit more. Realizing that we are the party that embraces things like therapy and working to better ourselves. That takes introspection and questioning ourselves. So, democrats over-think and it comes across as weak. We analyze and try to do better, and it makes us look uncertain about our principles. Yet, we aren't. We all know where we stand. We don't need all the words we waste justifying our position.
PS by the way this experience white America and all the other immigrants to America are experiencing with trump, has already occurred to indigenous peoples of America. Example: reservations, attempted genocide of indigenous people.

Hi Caitlin -- thank you for the feedback.
Thank you for responding. Y’all have integrity and a lot of heart, and I commented because I believed y’all would genuinely care to hear the feedback.

Yes Yes YES! Get Luked in the office, Get F**ked in any public space! (holding on to VERY little shame at this point)
Great episode! Rich, I love the virus analogy. All 5 of you made great points!
Yes! A Get Fucked tshirt would sell.

10/10, would definitely buy a get f*cked shirt and a get Luked shirt.
I was an early adopter of Find Out. If a premium subscription gave me a T it might be worth $10 a month.
Thanks for this conversation.

The brand is “WE are the power”
Love you all! I am in my 70's and would definitely buy a FUCK YOU t-shirt.
